Quotes From Chapter 9

First Quote:
Conversation with Atticus and Scout:
Scout: 'Do you defend niggers, Atticus?' I asked him that evening.
Atticus: 'Of course I do. Don't say nigger, Scout. That's common.'
Scout: 's what everybody at school says.'
Atticus: 'From now on it'll be everybody less one -'
Scout: 'Well if you don't want me to grow up talkin' that way, why do you send me to school?'

From this first quote, we can know that Scout wanted to avoid school as much as possible. We can also know that Scout was asking if her father, a lawyer, is defending niggers as Cecil Jacobs had announced in the school yard that her father is defending niggers which she wanted to know what he mean by saying that. Scout's dad, Atticus defended niggers for a number of reasons, mainly by the fact that if he do not defend niggers, he could not held his head high nor can he represent this county in the legislature.

Second Quote:
Conversation with Scout and Uncle Jack:
Uncle Jack: 'Scout, do you still hate me?'
Scout: 'Go on, please, sir.'
Uncle Jack :'Why, I didn't think you'd hold it against me,' he said. 'I'm disappointed in you - you had that coming and you know it.'
Scout: 'Didn't either.'
Uncle Jack: 'Honey, you can't go around calling people -'
Scout: 'You ain't fair, I said, 'you ain't fair.'

This conversation comes after Scout having a 'fight' with Francis who he called Scout's father a nigger lover. Uncle Jack asked Scout if she still hates him as he punished her for calling people bad names. Scout then told Uncle Jack that he is a nice person, but he does not understand children that well when he replied back that such conduct of hers need no understanding as he said her conduct was obstreperous, disorderly and abusive. The conversation ended well as Scout finally told Uncle Jack that her misbehaviour happened as Francis called her father, Atticus, a nigger lover. Uncle Jack then finally understands and he started to treat Scout's hand from the punishment she received just now.

Quotes From Chapter 8

First Quote: Conversation with Atticus and Scout:
Scout: 'The world's endin', Atticus! Please do something - !'
Atticus: 'No it's not,' he said.'It's snowing.'

Through this quote from Atticus and Scout, we can see that Scout has not seen snow before. This led him to think that the world is ending. When Jem asked Atticus on how to make a snowman, Atticus told Jem that he does not know how to. Even though Atticus does not want to dissapoint Jem and Scout, he doubted that there will be enough snow to even make a snowball. To make sure that there will be enough snow, Jem discouraged Scout from wasting it. They then walked over to Miss Maudie house when Jem asked her a few questions before he finally asked her if they can borrow some of her snow when she agreed in immediate response.

Second Quote: Conversation with Jem and Miss Maudie:
Miss Maudie: 'Jem Finch, you Jem Finch!'
Scout: 'Miss Maudie's callin' you, Jem.'
Miss Maudie: 'You all stay in the middle of the yard. There's some thrift buried under the snow near the porch. Don't step on it!'
Jem: 'Yessum!' He called. 'It's beautiful, ain't it, Miss Maudie?'
Miss Maudie: 'Beautiful my hind foot! If it freezes tonight, it'll carry off all my azaleas!'

From this quote, we know that Miss Maudie hated the snow for several reasons like carrying off all her azaleas(flowery shrubs). But, Jem commended that the snow was beautiful in which Miss Maudie strongly disagreed. Following this, Miss Maudie was bending over some bushes, wrapping them in burlap bags to keep it 'warm' in which Jem was puzzled in why she done so.

Conversation with Jem And Atticus:
Atticus: ' Son, I can't tell what you're going to be - an engineer, a lawyer, or a potrait painter. You've perpetrated a near libel in the front yard. We've got to disguise this fellow.' ('Fellow' refers to the snowman)
Atticus: 'I don't care what you do, as long as you do something,' he said. 'You can't go around making caricatures of the neighbours.'
Jem: 'Ain't a characterture,' Jem said. 'It looks just like him.'
Atticus: ' Mr Avery might not think so.'

From this third quote, we know that Atticus is against Jem im making caricatures of people which Jem replied that it 'just' looks like him only. In order to modify the snowman into somrthing else, Jem went to Miss Maudie's house and grabbed the sunhat and hedge-clippers from the back yard and put on the sunhat on the top of the head of the snowman and jammed the hedge-clippers into the crook of the snowman's arm.

Chapter 6 - Sequence Of Events

Quotes from Chapter 7

This is a conversation involving three people: Jem, Scout and Mr Nathan(also known as Mr Radley).

'Hidy do, Mr Nathan.' Jem said.
'Morning Jem, Scout,' said Mr Radley(also known as Mr Nathan), as he went by.
'Mr Radley,' said Jem.
'Mr Radley, ah - did you put cement in that hole down in that tree down yonder?'
'Yes', he said. ' I filled it up.'
'Why'd you do it, sir?'
'Tree's dying. You plug 'em with cement when they're sick. You ought to know that, Jem.'

Meaning:

This conversation had led to Jem being deep in thought and working himself into bad humour. This shows that Jem was moody at that time. Words like 'yonder' means distant but within sight in order to point to something far and visible. In the conversation, Mr Radley filled the tree with cement as it is sick. This may be a traditional way in healing the trees back then.

Quotes From Chapter 6

First quote: 'Don't get in a row of collards whatever you do, they'll wake the dead.'

Second quote: 'Shot in the air. Scared him pale, though. Says if anybody sees a white nigger around, that's the one. Says he got the other barrel waitin' for the next sound he hears in that patch, an' next time he won't aim high, be it dog, nigger, or - Jem Finch!'

Meanings:

For the first quote, collards are smooth-leaved kale. The sentence may mean that Jem, while they are climbing under the wire fence should not step on the smooth-leaved kale to avoid trouble from anyone from the Radley's residence that led to Scout, Jem and Dill hiding. Jem then lost his pants due to the struggle in the fence. Miss Stephanie then questioned Jem on where is his pants when Jem replied that he was playing strip poker. Miss Rachel then flared up thinking that Dill was gambling when Jem tried to appeased them saying that they were actually playing with matches.

For the second quote, Mr Radley had shot a Negro. The bullet did not hit him as Mr Radley shot it in the air, high up. What I do not understand is, why did Mr Radley said that if we saw a white nigger around, that's the one. He then said that there is another barrel(a tube through which a bullet travels when a gun is fired),
waiting for the next person to come in the patch and this time will be shooting the person be it anybody.
